What is bliss and where does one find it? Does it follow one or does one go behind it? It is not sold or bought in shops and cannot be mined and minted, but seems to be highly inflammable as the legends have always hinted.

It is evident from this poem that the map to the treasure trove will unravel itself when one falls in love. Here is a romantic poem in Tamil by Karkuzhali Sreedhar:

When the mind
swinging this way and that
like a clock's pendulum
comes to a stop,
the dimension of time
dissolves unperturbed
in the universal space.
At a moment
when the wind speaks
neither elongated
nor shortened,
the bodies
called you and I
become one life
and swim in unison
in the sea of love.
The throb of desire
that begins like
the quivering leaves
of a tree
swirls around
like a tsunami
and accelerates.
A comet
that looks at
our whirling about
hands intertwined
amidst the planets
that revolve non-stop
may scatter all over space
and imbed the shining particles
of blissful instants
as diamonds
in white cotton clouds;
It may tear through
the waves later,
bury in the seabed
and carry our heartbeat
all through the earth.
At a chosen moment
in an ensuing epoch,
let that magnificent treasure
proclaim our love that
we sowed the seeds of affection
by flying in space
and tunnelling the earth.

Poetry in translation #26

An overdose of solitude imposed by the lockdown puts the human mind through different perspectives. Solitude makes the mind more observant than ever before. Restrictions on movement will only apply to the body while imagination has a free run. I would very much love to cuddle the puppy dog from this poem in Tamil penned by Karkuzhali:

தரையில் உருண்டோடுகிறேன்;
Whatever number of times
looked into the single mirror
in this house with a single room,
only this single face is seen.
There is migraine because
the house is stuffy
alongwith endless frustration.
The tube light blinks
and winks one eye
and seeps like the Moon
covered by clouds.
Spinning about
on one leg,
the electric fan
sprays warm air.
A puppy dog
drawn in a single line
on the single sheet leftover
gets down and goes
around the feet.
When a coloured ball
is drawn
on this face
reflected in the mirror,
I roll off on the floor
looking at the face
of that single puppy dog
coming to plant a kiss.

My identity is not merely for me to be identified by you. It often helps me to remember who I am too. I am the sum of my beliefs and that, sometimes, makes me distraught as beliefs change in value and get reduced to naught. Thus, I can never be truly caught, says Poet Karkuzhali Sreedhar in this Tamil poem:

I am that woman
and also this woman.
Sometimes, I am
unaware of who I am.
Floating in the air
like smoke,
though visible,
I slip away
without getting caught
in your hands.
For a second,
I am the fragrance
wafting up the nose.
Inhaling deep
the next moment
after you try
to determine
who am I,
I turn into
an odour
that chokes.
I transform into
the daughter of wind
which circles the earth.
I disappear in an instant
when attempted
to be captured
into a framework.

Insomnia drives not just humans crazy but even makes poultry turn into night owls. Stifled minds gasp for air as the dark night turns fair. However heavy the eyelids may feel, weighed down by keeping awake the whole night, it is amazing how the poet visualizes them as a pair of roosters crowing out their greeting to the first signs of daylight.

To welcome
the calm of sleep,
I keep
the night's window open.
It doesn't spread easily
like a ray of light.
The mind which walks
on a path of no return
swinging arms
and raking the garbage
of memory,
pecks and eats henlike
a bit here, a bit there
and roams right
through the night.
Unable to bear
the itching
of memories
crawling like worms,
the eyelids crow
like twin roosters
get ready beforehand
to welcome the Sun.
